Softball recruiting · updated November 2026
When can college coaches contact softball recruits?
At the NCAA Division I level, coaches may contact softball recruits starting September 1 of junior year. Before that, the player can still email, fill in questionnaires and go to the program's camp; the coach just cannot start the conversation. Visits and offers open the same day, September 1 of junior year.
What the date covers
Softball has the latest date: no recruiting conversation of any kind - calls, texts, emails, DMs, visits or offers - between a D1 staff and a player until September 1 of her junior year. A coach can watch her play and run a camp she attends before then, but may not talk recruiting. Before that date a D1 coach may not initiate contact with the player, but the player may still fill in the program's recruiting questionnaire, email the staff, and go to the program's camp - and a coach may watch her or him play at PGF, Alliance Fastpitch and Triple Crown events (Colorado Fireworks, Sparkler), where 200-plus staffs evaluate at once.
Visits and offers open the same day, September 1 of junior year. D1 softball commitments cluster right after September 1 of junior year and through the following summer.
Division II, III and NAIA
Division II coaches may call and email from June 15 after sophomore year and may meet in person from the same date. Division III and NAIA coaches have no contact date: they may respond to a player at any time, which is why a D3 program can answer an email a D1 program legally cannot.
What to do before the date
Three things count before September 1 of junior year: the program's recruiting questionnaire (coaches build their first lists from it), a short introduction email with grad year, position, club and film, and the program's own camp. The camp is the one place a staff can legally evaluate a player in person before the date - see the full list of verified softball prospect camps, and the app's coach email templates write the introduction from a player's profile.
