Men's Soccer recruiting · updated November 2026
How many roster spots are there in D1 men's soccer now?
Since the 2025-26 season a Division I men's soccer team may carry 28 players. The old limit of 9.9 scholarships per team is gone at schools that opted into the House settlement: a program may fund up to the roster cap, but it may not keep anyone beyond it.
What changed
Before July 1, 2025, a D1 men's soccer program had 9.9 scholarships to split across an unlimited roster, and walk-ons filled the rest. The House settlement replaced the scholarship cap with a roster cap of 28 at every school that opted in. The Ivy League did not opt in; Division II, Division III and NAIA have no roster caps.
What it means for a recruit
Fewer freshman spots. Coaches now fill from the transfer portal and junior colleges first and sign fewer high-school players each year; walk-on spots have largely disappeared at capped schools. Men's soccer commits later than women's: most D1 commitments come in junior and senior year.
The practical answer is breadth: target programs across D1, D2, D3 and NAIA, and ask every staff how many players in your position and grad year they intend to take. The men's soccer camp list is sorted by division for that reason.
